LineArtStudio: Turn Any Photo into Clean SVG Line Art

LineArtStudio converts photos into scalable SVG line art using the Potrace engine, with three ready-made presets and full edge control for designers and illustrators.

Converting a photo to clean vector line art typically means hours in Illustrator—manually tracing edges, cleaning noise, adjusting curves. LineArtStudio automates this. Drop in a JPEG or PNG, get back production-ready SVG in seconds using Potrace, the same vectorization engine Inkscape uses.

The Potrace Engine

Potrace converts raster to smooth vector paths with mathematical precision. LineArtStudio pairs it with sensible presets so you skip command-line tweaking and get polished results immediately.

Output is true vector SVG—infinitely scalable, clean Bézier curves, no pixelation at any zoom.

Three Presets for Three Use Cases

Rather than exposing a wall of sliders, LineArtStudio ships with three curated presets:

  • Sketch - loose, expressive lines that preserve the hand-drawn feel of a photo. Great for portraits and artistic work.
  • Technical - tight, precise edge detection optimized for product photos, architecture, and diagrams where clean geometry matters.
  • Minimal - high-threshold tracing that strips away fine detail, leaving only the dominant shapes. Ideal for logos, icons, and simplified illustrations.

Each preset is adjustable—tweak edge sensitivity, stroke weight, and simplification if needed.

The Workflow

  1. Drop your photo - JPG, PNG, or WebP, any resolution
  2. Pick a preset - Sketch, Technical, or Minimal
  3. Preview in real time - adjustments render live in the split-view panel
  4. Export - download as SVG, or copy the SVG code directly to your clipboard

The split-view preview shows the original and the converted version side by side, so you can judge the result without switching tabs.

Use Cases

  • Illustrators vectorizing sketches or reference photos
  • Designers converting photos to brand assets
  • Developers creating lightweight SVG icons
  • Makers generating templates for laser/vinyl cutting
  • Content creators building distinctive visual styles

Why SVG?

SVG advantages:

  • Resolution-independent—scales to any size
  • Editable—tweak paths in Illustrator, Figma, Inkscape
  • Lightweight—tiny file size for line art
  • Animatable—CSS and JavaScript-friendly for web

You get usable SVG, not a flattened approximation.
